Is Pinterest a Female Platform?
Who doesn't love an aesthetic Pinterest board? I know I do! Pinterest is an awesome platform for anyone and any topic. Users can search for a topic and results will display as pictures or videos. These results are known as "Pins". Users can create a Pinterest board to categorize their images and ideas for future reference. For example, I have a Pinterest board for my future house, future wedding color scheme, foods, hairstyles, tattoos, outfits and dogs. You can pin/save any image and create a board with it. When you pin various posts, your feed will start to understand your interests and it will only show those interests.
According to the "Principles of Social Media Marketing" textbook, Pinterest was created in 2009 by three college friends who wanted a platform to showcase people's interests. By 2010, those individuals launched the platform. Pinterest grew slower than other social media platforms but has over 433 million users today. The top percentage of users are from the United States and 77% of users are females. Many Pinterest users not only use the app for creating collections of pins but also use it for shopping. Different pins lead to websites for shopping.
Pinterest, like the other social media platforms we have discussed, has an algorithm to view trends and other numbers. The algorithm for tracking statistics is simple. They track pins. For example, domain quality is tracked by the number of pins and interactions on a certain website. They also track pin quality, pinner quality, and relevance. Pinterest is a simple, user-friendly platform and I would argue that a 10-year-old, 30-year-old and 80-year-old could all understand the platform. If a business is using Pinterest, they likely care more about their statistics and care more about when to pin posts. The textbook recommends five to 30 pins per day and to pin more on the weekends. Another intriguing aspect of the app is that different topics perform better on different days. For example, Mondays are better for fitness content and Thursdays are better for fashion content.
I only began using Pinterest a couple years ago. I began to start thinking about my hopes, dreams, hobbies and goals. I think Pinterest is most popular with individuals who constantly think about the future. As I stated previously, I have a wedding board, house board, etc. I am not engaged and I do not have a house. However, I love having ideas of what I want my wedding to look like and how I want to decorate my house. In contrast, only 23% of men use Pinterest and I am curious as to why that statistic is so low. Let me know why you think this statistic is so low and whether or not you use the platform!
