Build Your Brand and Be Safe!
Listen carefully. Open a new tab on your computer and search for your name. What appears? Did your picture appear? Do articles about you appear? Are you tagged in other individuals' social media posts? Did you expect those items to show up or were you alarmed by the results? In contrast, did nothing show up for you? An individual's social media preference and brand can drastically change who notices and hires them. In chapter two, we discussed an individual's personal brand.
The majority of the pictures which appear in a search for my name are sports pictures, academic achievements, and awards. Thankfully, my parents were very strict with me and my siblings when it came to electronics and social media. I was never wrapped in the bad sides of social media, apart from receiving strange texts from random people and dealing with a little bit of cyberbullying.
I have always bought my own electronics, my car, my clothes, etc. The first electronic I owned was a Nook. Do you guys remember Nooks? They are awesome! Mine was similar to an iPad, so I could download games, watch Netflix and read books. Anyways, that was slightly off-topic so let's get back to social media. In middle school, I had an iPod and used Instagram. I used Instagram to post pictures with my friend group. These posts were often random, one of a Dairy Queen cup, another of my friends' feet. I found my way to the messaging app "Kik", and realized how scary social media can be. Then, my parents allowed me to buy my first phone in my freshman year of high school. Following that purchase, I was given permission to download Snapchat. Snapchat allows pictures to be sent and disappear within seconds. Unfortunately, it is easy to be sneaky on Snapchat. I eventually downloaded TikTok, and then downloaded Facebook last year. Facebook is a tricky platform because profile pictures and tagged photos show up on Google searches. Finally, let's talk about LinkedIn. LinkedIn is an amazing tool for individuals in the business world. It is a professional platform that allows individuals to upload their resumes, experiences, degrees and many other types of information. Ok, I will stop rambling about social media platforms.
